Wabtec Corporation [NYSE: WAB] has been recognized by Transportation Review Magazine as the exclusive recipient of “Top Digital Locomotive Solutions 2026,” based on our proprietary methodology, reflecting its position in the industry, and is also named among “Top Rail Asset Management Services,” reflecting its broader leadership. This profile has been developed by the Transportation Review research and editorial team based on insights from an interview with Rafael Ottoni Santana, Chairman and CEO.
Railroads operate on margins measured in seconds, gallons of fuel and available locomotive hours. A freight train may span miles while moving through changing grades, restrictions and operating conditions, leaving little room for inefficient decisions. Digital technology is shifting those decisions from manual judgment toward systems that can interpret conditions and respond in real time. Wabtec Corporation [NYSE: WAB] has built its locomotive digital strategy around that shift, combining train control, energy management, analytics and automation to help railroads extract more performance from assets already moving across their networks.
The strength of Wabtec's digital locomotive portfolio starts with a practical premise. Software must work within the physical realities of a train, not sit apart from them. Its Trip Optimizer system considers terrain, train composition, speed restrictions and operating conditions before calculating an optimal speed profile. It then controls locomotive throttle and dynamic brakes to help maintain that plan.
Trip Optimizer's closed-loop approach gives railroads a digital layer capable of influencing how a locomotive actually moves. The system can integrate with LOCOTROL distributed power and Positive Train Control or other Advanced Train Protection systems. Its Zero-to-Zero functionality adds automatic starting and stopping while SmartHPT optimizes locomotive performance against a specified horsepower-per-ton target.
Software architecture also matters when digital controls need to operate across locomotive platforms. Wabtec has separated Trip Optimizer from the locomotive control software so the application can operate through an independent high-performance environment and communicate through an AAR-compliant message-based interface. The design allows deployment across different locomotive platforms while supporting faster product updates and a common user experience across fleets.
Connecting software directly to locomotive behavior gives the technology a more practical role than a digital dashboard used for retrospective analysis. Route information, train conditions and control inputs can work together to influence how a locomotive operates in real time. Fuel management, train handling and automation consequently become part of the same digital control framework.
A Scalable Digital Strategy
Wabtec's digital locomotive strategy extends that control framework across several connected capabilities. Its Energy Management portfolio includes technologies such as Trip Optimizer and SmartHPT while its locomotive solutions also support train control, distributed power and automation. The combination connects locomotive operation with data-driven decision-making rather than treating each function as a separate system.
Railroads can build those capabilities incrementally because fleet modernization rarely happens all at once. Wabtec's digital framework supports a phased approach in which individual technologies can be introduced and expanded as priorities evolve. Its fuel optimization framework links Movement Planner,
LOCOTROL and Trip Optimizer, allowing savings opportunities to build across network planning, distributed power and individual locomotive performance.
Existing locomotives remain central to that strategy because railroads do not need to replace entire fleets to introduce new digital capabilities. Wabtec's modernization solutions can upgrade locomotives that have been in service for more than two decades with new control systems, traction technologies and digital capabilities. The company reports more than 1,800 modernizations across more than 24 countries, showing how digital functionality can be incorporated into an existing asset strategy.
A large installed base gives those capabilities room to scale across different fleets and operating conditions. Wabtec had an installed base of nearly 24,600 locomotives at the end of 2025, providing a substantial footprint for applying digital intelligence across varied locomotive configurations.
From Software to Results
Deployment at scale matters because the value of a digital locomotive system ultimately appears in railroad operations. Trip Optimizer offers one of the clearest examples. At a January 2024 milestone, Wabtec reported that the system had surpassed one billion auto miles, with approximately 12,000 locomotives using it worldwide. At that point, Wabtec reported cumulative savings of approximately 752 million gallons of diesel and 7.7 million tons of greenhouse-gas emissions.
Trip Optimizer's results are closely tied to how the system operates. The technology works from information about the train and route rather than relying on a fixed driving pattern. Its SmartHPT functionality can identify excess horsepower, automatically idle trailing units and isolate locomotives according to railroad-specific rules.
Automation adds another dimension to the system's role in locomotive operation. In 2021, CSX became the first railroad to demonstrate Trip Optimizer Zero-to-Zero. The system was designed to start a train from zero mph and bring it to a stop automatically while using train control inputs. The application shows how digital control can be introduced alongside physical fleet upgrades rather than treated as an isolated technology project.
Digital energy management also extends into newer propulsion technologies. Wabtec's FLXdrive battery-electric locomotive combines a large battery system with rail-specific thermal management and energy-management capabilities that help determine when batteries should discharge and recharge along a route. Its relevance to digital locomotive solutions comes from the digital energy-management capabilities that determine how propulsion energy is used along a route, rather than from electrification alone.
Software, hardware and operating data therefore work together across different locomotive applications. Railroads can use digital intelligence to improve how existing locomotives operate while also applying similar principles to newer propulsion systems. The broader opportunity is to make decisions surrounding locomotives more informed, repeatable and responsive.
Intelligence that Reaches the Rail Network
Wabtec's locomotive digitalization is built around a sequence of connected capabilities rather than a single product purchase. Energy management, train handling, asset decisions and automation can work together while remaining tied to the infrastructure railroads already depend upon.
Existing fleets provide a practical foundation for that approach. Railroads can build on established locomotives and control systems rather than treating digital transformation as a wholesale replacement exercise. Wabtec's installed base, modernization capabilities and locomotive-focused digital technologies give railroads multiple points of entry into the transition.
Taken together, the capabilities provide the context for Wabtec's recognition as Top Digital Locomotive Solutions 2026. The recognition aligns with the company's combination of locomotive intelligence, digital control, energy management, automation, scalable architecture and demonstrated deployment. Wabtec illustrates how digital technology can move beyond the screen and into the cab, the consist and the wider rail network, where its impact can be measured in fuel consumption, emissions, asset utilization and train performance.
