Founded 50 years ago by Ron McGraw and a business partner with one flatbed in Jersey City, Trans-American has grown into a family-owned operation with approximately 200 trailers, 50 drivers, and 95 employees. Today, the company continues to focus its operations on New Jersey, New York, and the Baltimore area while retaining the specialized heavy-haul focus that has defined its growth.

Its fleet includes equipment for port container operations, alongside specialized heavy-haul equipment like a 19-axle trailer capable of accommodating loads of up to 300,000 pounds over the road. This equipment gives Trans-American the capacity to move the large and heavy machinery involved in power and energy projects.

Planning begins well before a shipment moves, particularly when freight is coming from overseas. Some requests arrive a year or two ahead, giving Trans-American time to coordinate equipment, permits, routes, escorts, and delivery requirements. That lead time also helps when conditions change, like construction making an approved route invalid and requiring a new permit.

“Every heavy-haul move is different, so we build the solution around the load, the route, and the customer’s requirements,” says Craig McGraw, VP of sales and owner.

That approach extends into compliance and route planning. Trans-American conducts route studies and surveys for challenging moves, using pilot cars with height-check equipment to verify clearances. Remote scales help the team check loads before they enter the road, while relationships with Department of Transportation officials support navigation of state requirements.

Safety is reinforced by a workforce with deep operational experience. Many Trans-American drivers have been with the company for 25 or 30 years, while a dedicated safety director keeps teams informed about regulatory changes and company requirements. Drug testing and regular communication help ensure drivers remain aware of company expectations and the regulations governing their work.

Trans-American's role extends beyond the road, giving customers a single point of coordination from pickup through export. The company collects machinery, transports it to its South Plainfield warehouse, prepares it for overseas shipment, and deliver to the port. Export preparation includes shrink wrapping and protective materials to prevent rust and saltwater damage during ocean transport. By managing these steps together, Trans-American reduces the need for customers to coordinate multiple vendors.

A recent shipment demonstrated how that integrated operation works under pressure. When a vessel carrying customer equipment arrived in an east coast port a day or two late, Trans-American rearranged two 19-axle trailers and one 13-axle trailer so the shipment could still reach Ohio on schedule. Regular updates kept the customer informed and helped coordinate crane availability, avoiding disruption to the installation schedule.

Technology supports the operation without replacing the experience behind each move. Fleet cameras add visibility, while permitting and quoting remain largely manual because state requirements and road conditions vary. It continues to evaluate technology as it evolves, but experienced personnel remain central to managing complex heavy-haul projects.
