Governments should prioritize micro-mobility options with policy and new investments to democratize access and accelerate decarbonization.
FREMONT, CA: The transportation industry contributes the second-largest portion of carbon pollution to global warming in the United States. Transportation for personal use accounts for the largest portion of those emissions. The early success of Ford's well-liked F-150 Lightning and automakers' investments in domestic battery production are examples of how auto manufacturers are advancing electric vehicles (EVs), however, it is important to go beyond electric cars and trucks and encourage individuals to drive fewer, especially in urban areas. To enable them to move about more effectively, governments worldwide—from national to local—should give priority to alternative mobility options with policies and new investments.
Individuals are increasingly adopting e-bikes and e-scooters as a quick, simple, economical, and scalable option to cut transportation pollution while addressing the climate issue, which is causing the micro-mobility movement to grow quickly. The e-bike was the best-selling EV in the United States in 2021. With longer-range batteries, these cars are becoming faster. Cities all around the world are adopting shared systems that democratize access and provide thousands of reasonably priced shared e-bikes and e-scooters, from Madrid to Chicago.

These small electric vehicles (EVs) are half or possibly a quarter as heavy as the passengers they carry. Contrarily, few daily urban excursions require a 3- or 4-ton vehicle, especially considering that 60% of U.S. car trips are under six miles in length.
