Achieving Goals in the Aeronautical Arena and Eliminating Maintenance Inefficiencies

In an industry as multifaceted as aviation, the congruence of bespoke solutions and services providers with largescale manufacturers birthed numerous value-driven partnerships, all of which collectively serve the aerospace industry.
In 2018, Boeing chose BG Helicopters to carry out the last transformation phase of the CH-47F Chinooks. Boeing selected the firm because of its technical capacity and quality certifications, and the opportunity to address its needs effectively while avoiding the bureaucracy of a large business. For more than a decade now, Spain-based BG Helicopters has served its clients and provided them with a wide range of aeronautical consulting services.

The transformation process consisted of “DEPOP,” disassembly of CH-47D models and “REPOP,” reuse of parts in the CH-47F model, carrying out ground tests, and participation in flight tests. For the safety of the Chinook, the firm performed maintenance under the contract with a Boeing field service representative. Throughout this process, the relationship between BG Helicopters and Boeing was strengthened, paving the way for successfully completing several mission-critical applications in the aerospace sector.

“BG Helicopters was established as a maintenance operator for the civil helicopters. We provide bespoke services to our clients, as we understand the significance of retaining helicopters in operation and maintaining good operating rates,” says David Iturbide, Technical Manager at BG Helicopters. Owing to its longstanding experience, BG Helicopters also performs VIP charter flights, tourist flights, and all kinds of events.
It offers a wide range of aerial services, such as firefighting, power line inspection, aerial fumigation, photography, and filming. Furthermore, Boeing trained BG Helicopters’ technical staff on the new CH-47F model before the assembly phase. Both companies have signed a Basic Order Agreement, which allows Boeing, through BG Helicopters, to supply new components, repair and overhaul components in use, as well as engineering services. This partnership makes them a viable alternative for Chinook fleet maintenance, and has enabled BG Helicopters to embark on an ambitious modernization project for the ET Chinook fleet, which will be completed in 2024 in collaboration with Boeing.

BG Helicopters was recently involved in ascertaining the readiness of helicopters for pilot training for the first and second deliveries of CH-47F helicopters. The construction of these units included installing the engines, transmissions, aft pylon, rotor heads, and swash plates. When delivery was delayed due to issues with transport and materials, BG Helicopters addressed the hurdle by providing additional resources to complete the pilot training on time.

With many such success stories under its hood, BG Helicopters has been recognized as a renowned service provider for the Spanish Ministry of Defense, registered in the DGAM company registry.
